Chapter 12

Rachel swiveled her desk chair from the wide window that overlooked the entire city of Blue Larkspur, where on a clear day she was able to pick out hers, and her mother’s, subdivisions.

“This is ridiculous.” She spoke to her empty office, a rarity, and tried to focus on her laptop screen. Work was what she’d always used to avoid uncomfortable emotions and situations. Like how her father had betrayed the community twenty years ago. As assistant DA she’d thrown herself into case after case, doing whatever it took, working however long hours, all to fix Ben Colton’s crimes. And to ease her broken heart a little more.

Her concerns over her father and the Colton legacy had taken a back seat, though. Ever since James showed up in both her life and Iris’s. Almost another full week had passed since Rachel had introduced James to her family and he’d stepped into his role as Iris’s father with aplomb. She’d been able to stay a little aloof from him emotionally by focusing on each day as it came, sharing parenting duties with him around both of their work schedules. But at night, when the lights went out and she was alone in bed with herself, her thoughts, she had a more difficult time escaping the changes going on in her heart. Which in turn made her fear of committing to a man like her father, no matter how cursory, rear its head and appear in full Technicolor. Not that she was thinking about a relationship with James—nothing further than co-parenting—but it was only natural her thoughts would wander at times, imagining what they’d be like as a couple. Wasn’t it?

“Judge Reed wants to give you extra security.” Clara stood in front of her, waiting patiently for Rachel to look up from her desk, where she’d been daydreaming.

“Tell her I appreciate it, but Chief Lawson has already put extra patrols in my neighborhood.” She hadn’t told her assistant or anyone at work about the potential threat from Bethany Austin. Her relationship with James, and whomever he brought with him, was private. And since Gideon had installed the security system, she was feeling much better about being home alone with Iris. Not to mention leaving Iris with Emily each morning for work.

“She’s not going to take no for an answer. Brian Parson is still well-connected with Blue Larkspur’s criminal syndicate and he’s threatened you three times, counting today.” Clara referred to when the defendant had looked directly at her and said “I’ll see you in hell, Rachel Colton.”

It wasn’t usual for a suspect to do that, not once they were in trial proceedings. But it happened. All part of her job.

“The first two times don’t count. He was still thinking he was above the law. As for today, he’s afraid. We have a solid case against him. This time he’s going to be convicted of first-degree murder.”

Parson was heavily involved in the area’s worst drug trafficking to date. She couldn’t prove his ties
